Abdul Patel Declares Candidacy for City Council in Ward 43

Nine years after the amalgamations, Scarborough still needs a greater share of community services.  As a Candidate for Toronto City Council in Ward 43, Abdul Patel will work for:

• Greater Accountability

• Protecting Green Space

• Above all “A Fair Share for Scarborough”

Abdul Patel, his wife and 3 children are residents of Ward 43 for the past 12 years and have lived in the City for over 35 years. Mr. Patel has an outstanding record of community service to the City, to the Province of Ontario and to Canada.

• Human Rights Commissioner for the Province of Ontario from 1999-2005

• Member of the Board of Governors of Scouts Canada

• Founder of the Ansaar Foundation in 2000 to address the problem of Homelessness

• Organizer of successful Walks for the Homeless in 2005 and 2006 to raise awareness and funds to serve the needs of the homeless

• Member of Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair’s Community Advisory Council;

• Served on the Board of Governors of Riverdale Hospital on behalf of the City of Toronto

• Moderator for the Spicer Commission’s Citizen’s Forum on future Constitution for Canada

• Past Chair, East York Community Development Council;

• Served on the Board of Flemingdon Park Community Legal Clinic;

• Served on East York Safety Council for 10 years

• Founding member of East York Tenants Association and Thorncliffe Park Tenants Council

• Recipient of Governor General Award for Community service

• Recipient of Ontario Ministry of Citizenship and Culture’s award for Community Service

• Served as a member of the organizing Committee of Caribbean Literary Expo in 2004

• Member of the Campus Chaplain Association at University of Toronto for the past 10 years

These and other diverse leadership experiences demonstrate the leadership skills and commitment needed to represent the residents of Ward 43.

A Fair Share for Scarborough

needed to improve TTC services in Scarborough, improve the learning environment for children and youth. A fair share of resources for Scarborough will help create more green space in Ward 43 and build more recreational facilities that are accessible and affordable for the community.

Community Safety

As a member of the Advisory Council of the Toronto Police Chief since 2003, Abdul Patel fully understands that we all have a role to play in ensuring the safety of our community. He supports community policing that is results-oriented community based system which relies on the cooperation of police officers, volunteers and community members. Mr. Patel will work towards more effective relationship between Police and City Hall. He believes in providing the community with the tools needed to take a leadership role in reducing crime in our community.
